The Amillaia ostoyae, commonly referred to as the honey mushroom, traces its origin back to a minuscule spore, too tiny to be transported by the wind. Through its intricate exploration of tree roots, this fungus now blankets an expansive 2,200 acres, securing its place as the largest known living organism to date.
“When you’re down on the forest floor, the grand design remains hidden, and all you perceive are lifeless tree clusters,” explained Tina Dreisbach, a botanist and mycologist collaborating with the U.S. Forest Service’s Pacific Northwest Research Station in Corvallis, Oregon.
This ancient mushroom, with an astonishing age of 2,400 years, holds the distinction of being the most colossal living organism on Earth.

Unveiling Fungi Through Lifeless Trees
In 1998, Catherine Parks, a dedicated scientist based at the Pacific Northwest Research Station in La Grande, Oregon, made an astounding discovery. News of a substantial tree mortality due to root decay had reached her, originating from the forest to the east of Prairie City, Oregon.
Using aerial imagery, Parks meticulously examined the area marked by ailing trees and meticulously collected root samples from a total of 112 specimens.
With precision, she pinpointed the culprit responsible for this phenomenon through DNA analysis – the fungus in question. Employing a method involving the comparison of fungal cultures cultivated from the 112 samples, she successfully unraveled an astonishing revelation: 61 of these samples traced their origins to a singular organism. This revelation showcased the remarkable growth of a single fungus, exceeding any previous illustration of its magnitude.
