ABC News: 30 minutes ago, White House presses for Jimmy Kimmel Live to be suspended after Trump-Kirk joke, Democrats respond with ‘NOPE Act’ to protect political speech as FCC targets future of The View…

WASHINGTON – In a escalating clash over late-night comedy and free speech, the White House has formally urged ABC to suspend Jimmy Kimmel Live following a biting monologue targeting President Donald Trump’s alliance with conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. The move, announced Tuesday evening, marks a rare direct intervention into broadcast programming and has ignited a fierce partisan firestorm.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed the request during a briefing, stating that Kimmel’s segment – which lampooned Trump’s recent rally appearance with Kirk as a “bromance built on bad hair and worse ideas” – crossed into “defamatory territory that undermines national unity.” Sources inside the administration reveal the push stems from Trump’s personal outrage, echoed in a Truth Social post where he labeled Kimmel “a failing hack whose show is as dead as his ratings.” The demand cites FCC guidelines on indecency and potential bias in public airwaves, with officials hinting at broader reviews of “anti-conservative” content.

The backlash was swift and bipartisan in tone but sharply divided along party lines. House Democrats, led by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), unveiled the “National Oversight for Protected Expression” (NOPE) Act just hours later. The bill, co-sponsored by 45 Democrats including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, aims to shield political satire from federal reprisals. “This is McCarthyism in a MAGA hat,” Ocasio-Cortez declared on the House floor. “Comedy isn’t a crime, and neither is calling out hypocrisy. The NOPE Act will enshrine protections for shows like Kimmel’s, ensuring no administration can weaponize the airwaves against dissent.”

Meanwhile, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), under new appointees aligned with Trump’s agenda, has launched a preliminary investigation into ABC’s The View. The probe focuses on hosts Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar’s recent panels critiquing Trump’s judicial picks, probing for “partisan overreach” that could jeopardize the show’s license renewal in 2026. FCC Chair Brendan Carr defended the action, telling reporters, “Broadcast standards apply to all – no exceptions for echo chambers.”

Industry analysts warn this could chill free expression across networks. “Late-night TV is the last bastion of unfiltered political discourse,” said media professor Dr. Lena Hargrove of Georgetown University. “If Kimmel goes dark, expect a domino effect on shows from Colbert to Fallon.” ABC executives have yet to respond publicly, but insiders say executives are “furious” and preparing legal defenses.

As the ‘NOPE Act’ heads to committee, with a floor vote eyed for next week, the episode underscores deepening rifts in America’s media landscape. Trump, speaking from Mar-a-Lago, doubled down: “Fake news like Kimmel deserves the boot. America first – even in prime time.” With midterm elections looming, this comedy crackdown may just rewrite the rules of the airwaves.
