The list of memorable failures in the automotive industry is long, with popular names like the Ford Edsel, the explosive Pipto, and the ugly Polyac Az.General Motors’ tek. Even John DeLorean’s DMC-12 sports car, made famous by the Back to the Future series, was a disastrous sales flop that led to the company’s bankruptcy.

But now, the Tesla Cybertruck, Eloп Mхsk’s “baby,” is topping that list.

Elop MŅsk’s biggest professional failure

After more than a year on the market, sales of this 3-ton vehicle, with its initial price of $82,000, are significantly lower than Musk predicted. With a series of quality issues, including eight recalls in just 13 months, the most recent being a body-paper-peel defect, and its controversial design, the Cybertruck quickly became the subject of satire.

The Cybertruck not only looked bad or odd, like the failures of previous years, but also became the center of a wave of protests against Tesla, stemming from Moscow’s decisions to cut staff and its political opinions.

Worse than the Ford Edsel

The Cybertruck was “the biggest hit the white house has ever had,” according to Eric Noble, president of the CARLAB group and a professor at the Art Center College of Design in California (where Tesla’s chief designer, Fraz voor Holzhause, studied).

In terms of price alone, the Cybertruck is even worse than the Ford Edsel, which has become known as the ultimate failure. Ford had hoped to sell 200,000 Edsels a year when it was launched in 1958, but only managed 63,000. In 1960, the line of cars was discontinued.

Musk had predicted the Cybertruck would sell 250,000 vehicles a year, but Tesla sold less than 40,000 by 2024. More worrying still is that sales have shown no signs of picking up this year and have actually declined in January and February, according to Cox Automotive.

It’s not just Cybertruck: Tesla’s global sales are plummeting too: The number of vehicles delivered in the first quarter of 2025 fell 13% to 337,000, much lower than the expectation of 408,000. Tesla does not publish individual sales figures for the Cybertruck, which is grouped with the Model S and Model X, but it’s clear that the recall has impacted the model’s sales.

Contrary to Musk’s boastful claims about the “outrageous” excess, the reality is that Tesla has invested heavily in its Cybertruck factory before it can achieve the expected benefits. “Not only did they expect to sell a lot of money, but they also invested in the infrastructure to produce large quantities. But the assumption of a huge excess was wrong,” said expert Glepp Mercer.

Como señala Mercer: “Αhorraroп 200 milloпes de dólares eп líпeas de piпtυra, pero gastaroп cieпtos de milloпes iпteпtaпdo hacer qυe el acero iпoxidable fυпcioпara”.

Desde sυ laпzamieпto eп пoviembre de 2019, Cybertrυck ha mostrado algυпas señales пegativas.

Siп embargo, eп realidad, el precio iпicial del aυtomóvil es de $82,235 aпtes de dedυcir los beпeficios fiscales.

“When it comes to full-size pickups, Detroit’s big three (Ford, GM, Stellaris) serve customers better than anyone else,” Mercer said. “Mosk has rushed into the toughest market to conquer, and failure is inevitable.”
