JID gives flowers to Eminem, Method Man and Mos Def ✊

To promote he new album ‘God Does Like Ugly,’ JID sat down with Complex’s Jordan Rose to talk in depth about making the album over the course of five years, becoming a father in the process, becoming friends with Leonardo DiCaprio, doing song with Eminem and more.

“I had a bigger plan for that record [Animals Pt.1] that didn’t happen so I made adjustments or whatever. I sent Em 16 [bars], bro sent back, I was like ‘it’s long twin. Let’s make it a song.’ He was like ‘nah, let me just get this off.’ He wasn’t trippin’ on it being on an album.” said JID.

Then he continued: “I’ve seen a little discourse about his fans saying ‘oh, why he ain’t put…’ I’m like ‘bro don’t care.’ He’s a real rapper. Bro was just sharp and steel. He was just ready to rap. You gotta respect that coming from anybody and not put such a burden on where it landed. It was just calm conversation. ‘Oh cool,’ I’m like ‘I appreciate it, thanks Marshall.’

JID also said Em changed his verse couple of times (probably meaning on ‘Fuel’ record): “I stay out of who had the best verse. It’s about music to me. So whoever got the best verse, I don’t really care. I don’t never change no verse after I get somebody’s verse back. I’ve never done that. Em changed verse couple of times.”

JID continues: “It’s just about the art bro. It’s f–king culture we in bro. This is such a beautiful thing and I’m so blessed to be a part of it. So when I get opportunities to do a song with Mos Def, Eminem, Method Man…These are the people who set the foundation for some of the stuff we are doing. T.I., Outkast! Having these relationships is bigger than a lot of things I foresaw in the industry.”
