When Taylor Swift and Brittany Mahomes showed off the special celebratory handshake they had created at the Kansas City Chiefs’ game on Sunday, the interaction sparked a fierce reaction on the internet.
The singer, 33, and the former soccer star, 28, were seen doing the routine as they cheered on their respective partners – Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, 34, and quarterback Patrick Mahomes, 28 – during their 31-17 win against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Now footage has emerged that shows how the two stars put together the viral move right there in the audience of the sporting event.
In the clip, which was captured by an onlooker who was sat just below the VIP Suite at the game, the pair could be seen exchanging ideas and practicing, without knowing that the handshake would soon become one of the most talked about moments of the night.
Taylor appeared to suggest that the handshake include a fist pump, while they also tried out a spin.
The Cruel Summer songstress then proposed a little dance move that involved her moving her arms in a circular motion as she shook her body and stuck out her tongue.
In the end, however, the routine featured them slapping hands, grabbing one another by the arm, and bumping hips.
It’s unclear who originally shared the video, but it was reposted to TikTok as part of montage of clips taken throughout the sporting event by a woman named Katelyn Martini, where it gained more than 1.6 million views.
The ladies’ handshake had a mixed reaction from social media users – some people were unamused with it and branded it as ‘cringe,’ while others loved it and described the new pairing as ‘friendship goals.’
Afterwards, body language expert Judi James analyzed Taylor and Brittany’s interactions from the game exclusively for DailyMail.com, and she said they looked ‘rehearsed,’ which left her wondering it was all an ‘act’ and a part of the hitmaker’s ‘masterplan’ to ‘submerge herself’ into her new boyfriend’s world.
‘Taylor’s masterplan for total immersion into the role of Kelce superfan involves some teenager-with-a-crush rituals that are getting more pronounced on a daily basis,’ Judi said.
‘Has anyone ever tried this hard to submerge themselves into their boyfriend’s culture and team identity? Especially an A-list artist.
‘Taylor’s cosplay looks complete here as she shows off the results of what looks like some induction training from real WAG Brittany.
‘Suddenly, she and Brittany are acting like besties, grabbing at each other as the action on the pitch gets tense.
‘And then there’s the perfectly-choreographed celebratory special handshake that gives the impression that Taylor is now totally part of the Chiefs family.’
Judi explained that Taylor looked like she was trying to ‘copy’ Brittany throughout the game, pointing out that she ‘followed suit’ in everything that the 28-year-old did, while comparing her to a dancer who ‘hasn’t quite learned the choreography yet.’
‘Brittany initiates the nail-biting and celebratory movements and rituals as the game progresses – and Taylor is left to follow suit,’ she continued.
‘Taylor looks as though she has been dropped on the set of a new video that she hasn’t quite learned the choreography for yet.
‘Her body language is out of sync with Brittany’s, apart from the rehearsed-looking special handshake.
‘When Brittany does a little dance it’s Taylor who is left copying that dance, as though trying to memorize the steps.’
